We are opposed to the proposed Free Schools in Lambeth

‘We don’t need new school to open here’

A FREE school proposed by a controversial teacher would not help solve a borough’s classroom space shortage, it has been claimed…

Lambeth council leader Councillor Steve Reed, said: “You should build schools where there’s a shortage of places.

“There is no need in Kennington.”The site Ms Birbalsingh hopes to use has been partially empty since 2005 when pupils were moved to the new Lilian Baylis Technology School in Kennington Lane.

Councillor Peter Robbins, Lambeth’s cabinet member for children and young people, said the Grade II listed site was “unsuitable” for the new school.

“It would need thousands of pounds’ worth of work done on it to bring it up to the right state.

“And the idea of putting extra places in an area where they aren’t needed is foolish.”

Free schools are state-funded, but run outside council control.

Parents’ and teachers’ groups had until today to apply for Government cash to open them.

if free schools had anything to do with meeting demand for more places, there would certainly be none approved in this part of West Suffolk. Sadly, however, free school proposals reflect the desire of a minority and not the needs of the areas they are proposed for. There is already one free 11-16 high school set to open in Clare in September, and another 11-16 high school is proposed for Stoke by Nayland for September 2013 (when the middle school closes as it would be in the same grounds). Currently there is spare capacity in the existing upper schools (about 9%), and the LEA has estimated that if both free schools were to open there would be concerns about the viability of the existing schools.

Good to see our politicians speaking out. We have been on the opposite sides of the debate many times but then democracy is not a smooth ride. These people are elected and can be held to account. The people running the free school would be accountable to no-one except Gove.
